Dr. Guo explains

Fine lines and crepey texture

Smooth skin reflects light. Fine lines, dryness and crepey texture scatter it, which is why skin can look dull and tired even without dark spots. A good routine with a retinoid helps over time.

For lines and texture that skincare cannot reach, fractional CO2 resurfacing works deeper, stimulating new collagen as the skin heals. It is used for wrinkles, sun damage and acne scars, and it comes with real downtime, usually several days. We talk through whether it fits your skin, your goals and your schedule first.

What is CO2 resurfacing?

CO2 laser resurfacing removes damaged outer layers of skin with short pulses of light energy, revealing smoother skin beneath and stimulating collagen for a tighter, more elastic result. It improves wrinkles, scars, textural irregularities and warts, while limiting injury to the surrounding tissue. Dr. Guo uses a fractional CO2 laser.

Every treatment is performed personally by Dr. Danny Guo, who tailors the laser settings to your skin and provides detailed aftercare.

Procedure and recovery
  • Time: generally no more than 2 hours, with numbing used to keep you comfortable.
  • Downtime: CO2 resurfacing does require some downtime.
  • Healing: the skin surface typically heals in about 4 to 7 days after lighter treatments, and up to two weeks after deeper ones. Redness may take several weeks to fade completely.
  • Risks: complications such as burns and hyperpigmentation are uncommon. Dr. Guo and his team will go through the risks with you before treatment.
Who is it for?

CO2 resurfacing suits most people who want smoother, tauter skin on the face, neck, chest or arms, particularly those with sun damage, or acne or surgical scars.

  • CO2 is usually postponed during active acne, and in very dark skin it carries a higher risk of pigmentation changes. For darker skin tones, UltraClear, a cold fibre laser, is designed to limit heat, which may lower the risk of pigmentation changes; suitability is decided at your consultation.
  • It does not remove stretch marks.
Results
  • Improvement shows as the skin heals, usually within 1 to 2 weeks, and continues over the following months.
  • Improvement continues for up to 6 months as collagen production increases.
  • Brighter, smoother skin may last up to 2 years; whether and when to repeat treatment is decided at follow-up.
  • Some people choose a maintenance treatment every 18 to 24 months to help slow the visible signs of aging; Dr. Guo will advise on timing at follow-up.

CO2 Resurfacing frequently asked questions

What is CO2 laser resurfacing?

CO2 laser resurfacing uses short pulses of laser energy to remove thin, damaged outer layers of skin and stimulate new collagen. As the skin heals, it becomes smoother, tighter and more even.

Who performs CO2 laser resurfacing at Rejuvenation Calgary North?

Every CO2 laser resurfacing treatment at Rejuvenation Calgary North is performed personally by Dr. Danny Guo, a double board-certified dermatologist (Canada and the United States) and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon.

What does CO2 laser resurfacing treat?

It is used for wrinkles and fine lines, acne scars and surgical scars, sun damage and uneven skin texture on the face, neck, chest and arms. It can also improve enlarged pores and acne marks.

How long is the recovery after CO2 laser resurfacing?

Unlike many non-invasive treatments, CO2 resurfacing requires some downtime. Expect redness, swelling and peeling while the skin surface heals, typically over 4 to 7 days for lighter treatments and up to two weeks for deeper ones. Residual redness can last several weeks. Dr. Guo provides detailed aftercare instructions, including careful sun protection.

How long do CO2 laser results last?

Improvement continues for up to 6 months as collagen production increases, and results may last up to 2 years, as the skin continues to age naturally. Sun protection and good skincare help maintain them.

Who is a good candidate for CO2 laser resurfacing?

It suits most people who want smoother, tighter skin or improvement in scars and sun damage. It is generally not recommended for people with active acne or very dark skin, where the risk of pigmentation changes is higher. Dr. Guo will assess your skin at your consultation.

Does CO2 laser resurfacing hurt?

A numbing cream is applied beforehand, and many people describe a hot, prickling sensation during treatment. The skin can feel like a sunburn for a few days afterwards.

How many CO2 laser treatments will I need?

Many people need only one treatment for a given concern; deeper concerns such as acne scars may need more. Some people choose a maintenance treatment every 18 to 24 months, and Dr. Guo will advise on timing at follow-up.

When will I see results from CO2 laser resurfacing?

Improvement shows as the skin heals, usually within 1 to 2 weeks, and continues for up to 6 months as collagen production increases.
