What is PicoWay?
PicoWay delivers energy in picoseconds to break down melanin or tattoo pigment in the skin. It works mainly in the deeper layers, with little damage to the outer layers, and the skin’s response allows new collagen and elastin to grow.
It is used for:
- Benign pigmented lesions and freckles
- Melasma, after a medical assessment
- Acne scars
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Tattoos
Dr. Guo’s clinical team performs PicoWay under his medical direction, selecting the wavelength and applicator best suited to your skin and concern.
Who is it for?
PicoWay is suitable for most people and a wide range of skin tones; suitability is assessed individually, and the settings are adjusted to your skin type.
It should not be used on cancerous pigmentation. Have any pigmented area confirmed as benign by a medical professional before treatment.
Comfort and recovery
- Unlike traditional lasers, PicoWay works mainly by a photoacoustic effect, with less heat to the surrounding tissue, which helps lower the risk of scarring and scabbing.
- Most people return to their daily activities straight away; recovery varies with the area treated, the settings and how your skin responds.
- Tattoo removal can be mildly painful. For wrinkles and pigmentation, most people feel only mild discomfort.
- Common side effects include redness and swelling; others are possible.
Results
Results depend on the location, depth, size and type of pigmentation. Many pigmented lesions respond well to PicoWay over a few treatments, and milder pigmentation can improve after a single treatment.
Results vary from person to person and with the condition being treated.

What is the PicoWay laser?
PicoWay is a picosecond laser that delivers ultra-short pulses of energy to break down unwanted pigment or tattoo ink in the skin, while working mainly beneath the surface, with little damage to the outer layers of skin.
Who performs PicoWay treatments at Rejuvenation Calgary North?
PicoWay treatments at Rejuvenation Calgary North are performed by our clinical team under the medical direction of Dr. Danny Guo, a double board-certified dermatologist.
What can PicoWay treat?
PicoWay is used for benign pigmented lesions, sun spots and freckles, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and tattoo removal.
How many PicoWay treatments will I need?
It depends on the type, depth, size and location of the pigment. Milder pigmentation can improve after one or two treatments, while tattoo removal usually takes several sessions.
Is there downtime after PicoWay?
Most people resume their daily activities right away. Common side effects include temporary redness and swelling in the treated area; others are possible.
Should pigmented spots be checked before laser treatment?
Yes. Any pigmented spot should be confirmed as benign by a medical professional before it is treated with a laser, and PicoWay should not be used on cancerous pigmentation. Rejuvenation Calgary North is a dermatologist-led clinic under the medical direction of Dr. Danny Guo.
Does PicoWay hurt?
For wrinkles and pigmentation, most people feel only mild discomfort, often described as a snapping sensation. Numbing cream can be used.
When will I see results from PicoWay?
Treated spots often darken slightly and then fade over the following weeks as the body clears the pigment. Further improvement shows after each treatment.
How long do PicoWay results last?
Pigment that has cleared does not usually come back on its own, but sun exposure and hormones can cause new pigmentation, and melasma in particular can return. Daily sun protection helps maintain results.
