What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable treatment that temporarily softens facial lines and wrinkles, without surgery.
At Rejuvenation Calgary North, every Botox treatment is injected personally by Dr. Danny Guo, a double board-certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon.
How Botox works
Botox blocks the nerve signals that tell specific facial muscles to contract. With the muscle relaxed, the skin above it sits smoother and lines soften.
- Onset: results usually appear within 4 to 7 days, and can take up to 14 days to show fully.
- Duration: effects typically last 3–4 months, after which treatment can be repeated.
The procedure
A Botox procedure with Dr. Guo begins with a consultation about your goals. The appointment itself takes around 10–20 minutes.
- Cleansing: the skin is cleaned to prevent infection.
- Marking: Dr. Guo may mark the injection points.
- Injection: a very fine needle is used, and the injections take only a few minutes.
Most patients describe a light pinch. No anesthesia is needed, though a topical numbing cream is available if you are concerned about discomfort.
Recovery and aftercare
Downtime is minimal, and most patients return to their day straight away. For the best result:
- Stay upright for about 4 hours, and avoid lying down or bending over for long periods in that time.
- Avoid rubbing, massaging or pressing on the treated area for 24 hours.
- Skip strenuous activity and heavy exercise for 24 hours.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, as it can increase bruising.
- Do not stop any prescribed medication, including blood thinners, unless the doctor who prescribes it advises you to. Tell Dr. Guo about all medications and supplements you take before treatment.
These precautions help keep the product in the muscles it was placed in.
Areas treated
Repeated expressions such as frowning, squinting and smiling gradually set lines into the skin. Botox relaxes the muscles responsible, so the skin can smooth out.
- Forehead lines: horizontal creases from raising the eyebrows.
- Frown lines (glabellar lines): vertical lines between the eyebrows, which can read as concern or anger even at rest.
- Crow’s feet: fine lines at the outer corners of the eyes, most visible when smiling.
- Bunny lines: wrinkles on the sides of the nose from scrunching.
Medical uses
Botox is not only cosmetic. It is used as a preventative treatment for chronic migraines, reducing how often they occur by blocking the nerve signals involved in pain. It can also relieve excessive sweating by inhibiting the nerves that trigger the sweat glands.

What is Botox and how does it work?
Botox is an anti-wrinkle treatment that involves cosmetic injections to temporarily relax the muscles that cause facial wrinkles. It is most commonly used for forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet; other areas can be treated after assessment.
What types of facial wrinkles can Botox treat?
Botox mainly improves dynamic lines, the lines caused by facial expressions. Static lines, which stay visible at rest as the skin ages, may also soften, depending on their cause and depth; deeper static lines may need other treatments as well.
Is Botox suitable for all skin types?
Skin type is usually not the limiting factor for Botox; suitability is assessed individually. During the initial consultation, Dr. Guo will assess your skin and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
How long does a Botox injection session take?
A Botox injection session is a simple procedure that typically takes about 10–20 minutes, depending on the areas being treated.
What should I expect immediately after the treatment?
You may experience minor redness or swelling at the injection sites for a few hours after treatment. These effects are temporary and usually subside quickly.
When will I see the results of my Botox treatment, and how long will they last?
Results usually appear within 4 to 7 days after injection, and can take up to 14 days to show fully. Patients can benefit from the results for months, usually around 3–4 months before needing a follow-up treatment.
Are there any potential side effects of Botox?
Botox is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include temporary bruising, headaches and slight discomfort at the injection sites; others are possible. Dr. Guo's detailed knowledge of facial anatomy helps minimize the risk of adverse effects.
Can Botox be combined with other medical treatments?
Yes, Botox can be combined with other medical treatments such as dermal fillers for a comprehensive facial rejuvenation. This combination can address both muscle-related wrinkles and volume loss.
Is Botox effective for conditions other than wrinkles?
Besides treating facial wrinkles, Botox is also used for medical conditions such as muscle spasms and masseter muscle hypertrophy. It can provide relief from symptoms and improve quality of life.

Who performs Botox injections at Rejuvenation Calgary North?
Every Botox treatment at Rejuvenation Calgary North is injected personally by Dr. Danny Guo, a double board-certified dermatologist (Canada and the United States) and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon.
Why choose a dermatologist for Botox in Calgary?
A dermatologist has specialist medical training in the skin and in facial anatomy. Dr. Guo's additional fellowship training in Mohs surgery and facial reconstruction gives him a detailed understanding of the facial muscles, blood vessels and nerves, which supports safe, precise and natural-looking results.
Does Botox hurt?
Most people feel only a brief pinch with each injection. The needle is very fine, and a session usually takes about 10–20 minutes.
Is there downtime after Botox?
Most people return to their usual activities straight away. Small bumps, redness or a little bruising at the injection sites can occur and usually settle within hours to a few days. Dr. Guo will give you aftercare advice for the day of treatment.
How often will I need Botox?
Results usually last around 3–4 months, so many people repeat treatment a few times a year. The timing of each treatment is decided with Dr. Guo at follow-up.
