What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator, also called a biostimulator, made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Instead of filling an area with gel the way a dermal filler does, Sculptra prompts your skin to rebuild its own collagen over the following months.
It is used to restore facial volume lost with age and to soften wrinkles and folds, including hollow cheeks and temples, nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Dr. Guo also uses Sculptra to rejuvenate the neck and hands. Because the change is gradual, results tend to look natural rather than sudden.
At Rejuvenation Calgary North, every Sculptra treatment is planned and injected personally by Dr. Danny Guo, a double board-certified dermatologist.

How Sculptra works
Sculptra stands out from other cosmetic treatments due to its unique mechanism. While traditional fillers often rely on substances like hyaluronic acid to provide instant volume, Sculptra goes deeper. It stimulates the underlying structure of the skin, encouraging the growth of collagen over time. This process not only addresses the immediate appearance of wrinkles but also contributes to the long-term improvement of skin elasticity and volume.
The production of collagen is essential for maintaining youthful skin. As we age, collagen loss leads to skin laxity, loose skin, and the formation of deep lines and skin depressions. Sculptra combats these signs of aging by enhancing the natural collagen base, resulting in fuller, firmer skin over months of treatment.

The procedure and recovery
The Sculptra procedure is straightforward and minimally invasive, making it a preferred option for many patients seeking effective treatment with minimal downtime. During the initial consultation, Dr. Guo will assess your current skin condition, facial skin structure, and discuss your ideal outcomes. This personalized approach ensures that the treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs.
The actual treatment involves a series of injectable treatments administered into the deeper layers of the skin. These treatment sessions typically take about 30 to 45 minutes and are spaced several weeks apart to allow for gradual collagen development. Patients might experience minor swelling or redness at the injection sites, but these effects usually subside within a few days after treatment.

Recovery time and aftercare
Recovery time after a Sculptra treatment is minimal, allowing patients to resume their daily activities almost immediately. However, to achieve the best results, it is crucial to follow Dr. Guo’s aftercare instructions. Here are some key points to consider:
- Hours Before Treatment: Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications to minimize bruising.
- Days After Treatment: Maintain a gentle skincare routine and avoid sun exposure to protect the treated areas.
- Weeks After Treatment: Regularly massage the treated areas as advised by Dr. Guo to promote even collagen distribution.
The longevity of Sculptra's effects is one of its most appealing features. While traditional fillers might require frequent touch-ups, Sculptra provides longer-lasting results due to its ability to stimulate natural collagen production. The initial improvements are often subtle, but as collagen formation continues, patients will notice significant enhancement in skin volume and reduction in facial wrinkles.

Sculptra vs. dermal fillers
Sculptra and hyaluronic acid fillers both restore volume, but they work differently and suit different goals.
- How they work: Fillers add volume directly with a hyaluronic acid gel. Sculptra stimulates your own collagen, so the volume that develops is your own tissue.
- When you see results: Filler results are visible right away. Sculptra results build gradually over a few months.
- How long they last: Hyaluronic acid fillers generally last 6 months to 2 years. Sculptra results can last two years or more.
- Where they are used: Fillers are suited to precise shaping, such as the lips, cheekbones and under-eye area. Sculptra is suited to broader volume loss across the cheeks, temples and lower face, as well as the neck and hands, and is not used in the lips.
- Reversibility: Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Sculptra cannot be dissolved, which is one reason careful planning and conservative treatment matter.
Many patients benefit from a combination. Dr. Guo also offers HarmonyCa, a hybrid of hyaluronic acid and a collagen stimulator. He will assess your facial structure and explain which approach, or which sequence of treatments, fits your goals.
Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?
Sculptra is often a good fit if you:
- Have gradual, generalized facial volume loss, such as flattening or hollowing of the cheeks and temples
- Want to rejuvenate the neck or hands
- Want a subtle, progressive change rather than an immediate one
- Prefer longer-lasting results and are comfortable with a series of treatments
Another treatment may suit you better if you want an immediate result for an event, want to enhance a specific feature such as the lips, or are mainly concerned with skin texture or sun damage, where laser resurfacing may be more appropriate.
Sculptra is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area, or are allergic to any of its ingredients. Tell Dr. Guo if you have a history of keloid scarring or an autoimmune condition so he can advise whether Sculptra is right for you.
Sculptra results, sessions and side effects
How many sessions will I need?
Sculptra is given as a series of treatments, typically two to four sessions spaced at least four weeks apart. The number of sessions and vials depends on your age, the degree of volume loss and the areas treated, and Dr. Guo will outline a plan at your consultation.
When will I see results?
You may look fuller for a few days after treatment because of the fluid in the injection, and this settles. The real improvement appears gradually over the following two to three months as new collagen forms, and continues to build after each session.
Risks and side effects
Common side effects are swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness at the injection sites, which usually settle within days. Small bumps under the skin (papules or nodules) can occur, sometimes weeks or months after treatment; careful injection technique and massaging the area as instructed lower this risk. As with any injectable, serious complications such as infection or blockage of a blood vessel are rare but possible. Dr. Guo will review the risks with you before treatment.
