Sculptra vs. Dermal Fillers: Which Is Right for You?

Sculptra and hyaluronic acid fillers are both injectables that restore facial volume, but they work in very different ways. Understanding the difference helps you have a more useful conversation at your consultation.

How Sculptra and dermal fillers compare

How dermal fillers work

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are gels that add volume directly where they are placed. The result is visible immediately, lasts roughly 6 months to 2 years depending on the product and area, and can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.

How Sculptra works

Sculptra is a collagen stimulator made of poly-L-lactic acid. It does not fill; it prompts your skin to produce its own collagen. Results appear gradually over two to three months, build over a series of sessions, and can last two years or more. Sculptra cannot be dissolved.

Key differences at a glance

  • Onset: filler is immediate; Sculptra is gradual.
  • Longevity: filler lasts 6 months to 2 years; Sculptra can last two years or more.
  • Precision: filler is better for shaping a specific feature; Sculptra is better for broad, generalized volume loss.
  • Reversibility: hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved; Sculptra cannot.
  • Sessions: filler is often a single visit; Sculptra is a series.

When a filler may be the better choice

Fillers tend to suit people who want to enhance or define a particular feature, such as the lips, cheekbones, chin or under-eye area, or who want a result in time for an event.

When Sculptra may be the better choice

Sculptra tends to suit people with gradual, overall volume loss, such as hollowing of the cheeks and temples, who want a subtle change that develops over time and lasts longer. Dr. Guo also uses Sculptra for the neck and hands.

Can they be combined?

Yes. Many treatment plans use Sculptra to rebuild overall support and a small amount of filler to refine specific features. There is also a hybrid option, HarmonyCa, which combines hyaluronic acid with a collagen stimulator in one treatment.
