What is HarmonyCa?

HarmonyCa (HArmonyCa® with Lidocaine) is a hybrid injectable from Allergan Aesthetics that combines two well-established ingredients in one syringe: hyaluronic acid (HA) and calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres. It was authorized by Health Canada in 2026 for facial soft tissue augmentation.

It belongs to the family of biostimulators, also called collagen stimulators, alongside Sculptra. What sets it apart is its dual action: you see a lift right away, and the collagen-stimulating effect develops afterwards.

How HarmonyCa works

The hyaluronic acid gel gives an immediate lifting and plumping effect. The calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres act as a scaffold in the deeper skin, supporting your body's own collagen production over the following months. HarmonyCa also contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, for comfort during injection.

HarmonyCa is placed in the deep dermal and subdermal layers, most often in the cheeks and to soften shadowing around the chin, to improve firmness and support rather than to enlarge a single feature. According to the manufacturer's clinical findings, results can last up to 18 months.

The HarmonyCa procedure

Your treatment starts with a consultation with Dr. Guo, who assesses your facial structure, skin quality and goals and confirms whether HarmonyCa, another biostimulator such as Sculptra, or a different treatment suits you best.

On the day, the skin is cleansed and the injection points are planned. HarmonyCa is injected with a fine needle or cannula in the office, and most people return to normal activities the same day.

Recovery time and aftercare

Redness, swelling, tenderness and occasional bruising at the injection sites are common and usually settle within several days. To support healing:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Avoid saunas, hot tubs and prolonged sun exposure for the first few days.
  • Do not press on or massage the treated areas unless Dr. Guo instructs you to.

Dr. Guo will give you specific aftercare instructions and let you know when to follow up.

HarmonyCa vs. Sculptra vs. dermal fillers

All three restore support or volume, but in different ways:

  • HarmonyCa: A hybrid of hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite. It gives an immediate lift and then supports collagen production, with results lasting up to 18 months.
  • Sculptra: Made of poly-L-lactic acid. It does not fill immediately; results build gradually over a few months through a series of sessions and can last two years or more.
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers: Give immediate volume and precise shaping, generally last 6 months to 2 years, and can be dissolved if needed.

The hyaluronic acid in HarmonyCa can be dissolved, but the calcium hydroxyapatite cannot, so the treatment is not fully reversible. Dr. Guo may recommend one of these treatments or a combination, depending on your facial structure and goals.

Who is a good candidate for HarmonyCa?

HarmonyCa is often a good fit if you:

  • Have mild to moderate loss of firmness or support in the cheeks, or shadowing around the chin
  • Want an improvement you can see right away, along with longer-term collagen support
  • Are looking for a natural-looking lift rather than added volume in one feature

HarmonyCa is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area, or are allergic to any of its ingredients, including lidocaine. Tell Dr. Guo about any history of severe allergies, autoimmune conditions or previous filler treatments so he can advise whether HarmonyCa is right for you.

HarmonyCa results and side effects

When will I see results?

The hyaluronic acid provides a lift you can see right away, although some swelling is normal in the first few days. The collagen-supporting effect of the calcium hydroxyapatite develops over the following months. Results can last up to 18 months and vary from person to person.

How many treatments will I need?

The amount of product, and whether a follow-up treatment is needed, depend on your facial structure and goals. Dr. Guo will outline a plan at your consultation.

Risks and side effects

The most common side effects are redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching at the injection sites, which are usually mild and temporary. Lumps or nodules can occasionally occur. As with any injectable, serious complications such as infection or blockage of a blood vessel are rare but possible. Dr. Guo will review the risks with you before treatment.
