What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator, also called a biostimulator, made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Instead of filling an area with gel the way a dermal filler does, Sculptra prompts your skin to rebuild its own collagen over the following months.
It is used to restore facial volume lost with age and to soften wrinkles and folds, including hollow cheeks and temples, nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Dr. Guo also uses Sculptra to rejuvenate the neck and hands. Because the change is gradual, results tend to look natural rather than sudden.
At Rejuvenation Calgary North, every Sculptra treatment is planned and injected personally by Dr. Danny Guo, a double board-certified dermatologist.
How Sculptra works
Hyaluronic acid fillers add volume directly. Sculptra works differently: it stimulates the deeper skin to produce collagen over the following months.
Collagen loss with age leads to skin laxity, deep lines and hollows. Rebuilding that collagen can gradually give fuller, firmer skin.
The procedure
At your consultation, Dr. Guo assesses your skin and facial structure and discusses your goals. Sculptra is then injected into the deeper layers of the skin.
Sessions take about 30 to 45 minutes and are spaced at least four weeks apart to allow collagen to develop. Minor swelling or redness at the injection sites usually settles within a few days.
Recovery and aftercare
Most patients resume daily activities almost immediately.
- Before treatment: avoid alcohol. Tell Dr. Guo about any blood-thinning medication, and do not stop prescribed medication without speaking to the doctor who prescribes it.
- Days after: keep your skincare gentle and avoid sun exposure.
- Weeks after: massage the treated areas as advised by Dr. Guo to promote even collagen distribution.
Sculptra vs. dermal fillers
Sculptra and hyaluronic acid fillers both restore volume, but they work differently and suit different goals.
- How they work: Fillers add volume directly with a hyaluronic acid gel. Sculptra stimulates your own collagen, so the volume that develops is your own tissue.
- When you see results: Filler results are visible right away. Sculptra results build gradually over a few months.
- How long they last: Hyaluronic acid fillers generally last 6 months to 2 years. Sculptra results can last two years or more.
- Where they are used: Fillers are suited to precise shaping, such as the lips, cheekbones and under-eye area. Sculptra is suited to broader volume loss across the cheeks, temples and lower face, as well as the neck and hands, and is not used in the lips.
- Reversibility: Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Sculptra cannot be dissolved, which is one reason careful planning and conservative treatment matter.
Many patients benefit from a combination. Dr. Guo also offers HarmonyCa, a hybrid of hyaluronic acid and a collagen stimulator. He will assess your facial structure and explain which approach, or which sequence of treatments, fits your goals.
Who is a good candidate?
Sculptra is often a good fit if you:
- Have gradual, generalized facial volume loss, such as flattening or hollowing of the cheeks and temples
- Want to rejuvenate the neck or hands
- Want a subtle, progressive change rather than an immediate one
- Prefer longer-lasting results and are comfortable with a series of treatments
Another treatment may suit you better if you want an immediate result for an event, want to enhance a specific feature such as the lips, or are mainly concerned with skin texture or sun damage, where laser resurfacing may be more appropriate.
Sculptra is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area, or are allergic to any of its ingredients. Tell Dr. Guo if you have a history of keloid scarring or an autoimmune condition so he can advise whether Sculptra is right for you.
Results, sessions and side effects
How many sessions will I need?
Sculptra is given as a series of treatments, typically two to four sessions spaced at least four weeks apart. The number of sessions and vials depends on your age, the degree of volume loss and the areas treated, and Dr. Guo will outline a plan at your consultation.
When will I see results?
You may look fuller for a few days after treatment because of the fluid in the injection, and this settles. The real improvement appears gradually over the following two to three months as new collagen forms, and continues to build after each session.
Risks and side effects
Common side effects are swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness at the injection sites, which usually settle within days. Small bumps under the skin (papules or nodules) can occur, sometimes weeks or months after treatment; careful injection technique and massaging the area as instructed lower this risk. As with any injectable, serious complications such as infection or blockage of a blood vessel are rare but possible. Dr. Guo and his team will go through the risks with you before treatment.

What is Sculptra and how does it work?
Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator offered at Rejuvenation Calgary North that stimulates the body's natural collagen production. Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra works gradually to restore facial volume, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity over time. Dr. Guo uses Sculptra to target areas like cheek hollows, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines, which can give a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
How many Sculptra treatment sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies with your needs and goals. Most patients have a series of two to four sessions spaced at least four weeks apart. During your consultation, Dr. Guo will create a personalized treatment plan.
What can I expect during the Sculptra treatment procedure?
During a Sculptra treatment, Dr. Guo will administer a series of injections into the deeper layers of your skin. The procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and you may experience minor swelling or redness at the injection sites. These effects usually subside within a few days. Dr. Guo aims to keep the procedure as comfortable as possible.
How long is the recovery time after a Sculptra treatment?
Recovery time after a Sculptra treatment is minimal. Most patients at Rejuvenation Calgary North can resume their daily activities almost immediately. Dr. Guo advises avoiding strenuous activities and sun exposure for a few days after the treatment to support the best possible result. Applying cold packs can help reduce any minor swelling.
How long do the results of Sculptra last?
Sculptra results can last longer than those of most hyaluronic acid fillers. The effects may last two years or more, depending on individual collagen production and skin condition, and the timing of any top-up is decided at follow-up. Patients often notice gradual improvements in skin volume and reduction in wrinkles over several months as collagen continues to develop.
Is Sculptra safe for all skin types?
Skin type is usually not the limiting factor for Sculptra; suitability is assessed individually. Every patient has a thorough consultation with Dr. Guo to assess their skin and medical history and confirm that Sculptra is appropriate. It is best suited to people looking to address volume loss, skin laxity and deep lines.
What aftercare is required following a Sculptra treatment?
Aftercare is crucial for achieving the best results with Sculptra. We recommend applying cold packs to reduce swelling, avoiding alcohol before the treatment (do not stop prescribed blood-thinning medication yourself; that decision is for the doctor who prescribes it), and massaging the treated areas as instructed. Following these guidelines helps the collagen stimulator work as intended to rejuvenate your skin.

What is the difference between Sculptra and dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers add volume immediately with a hyaluronic acid gel and can be dissolved if needed. Sculptra is a collagen stimulator: it works gradually by prompting your skin to produce its own collagen, its results can last two years or more, and it cannot be dissolved.
When will I see results from Sculptra?
Results appear gradually, usually over two to three months, as your skin produces new collagen. Any fullness in the first few days comes from the fluid in the injection and settles quickly.
What are the possible side effects of Sculptra?
Swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness at the injection sites are common and usually settle within days. Small bumps under the skin can occasionally form, sometimes weeks or months later. Serious complications such as infection or blockage of a blood vessel are rare but possible.
Is Sculptra a biostimulator?
Yes. Sculptra is a biostimulator, also called a collagen stimulator. It is made of poly-L-lactic acid, which stimulates the skin to produce new collagen over time.
How much does Sculptra cost in Calgary?
Sculptra pricing is determined at consultation, because it depends on your individual treatment plan. Contact us to book a consultation with Dr. Guo and receive a quote.
Can Sculptra be used on the neck and hands?
Yes. In addition to the face, Dr. Guo uses Sculptra to rejuvenate the neck and hands. He will assess these areas at your consultation and advise whether Sculptra is suitable for you.
Does Sculptra hurt?
Most people feel only mild discomfort. A local anesthetic may be added to the injection or a numbing cream used, and tenderness for a few days afterwards is common.
