Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating unrelated to heat or exercise. Hyperhidrosis-induced sweating usually occurs on your hands, feet, underarms, and face. The sweating takes place at least once a week.

Because hyperhidrosis-induced sweating far surpasses normal sweating, this condition can disrupt daily activities and cause social anxiety. Profuse sweat can lead to a skin infection.

Sometimes, excessive sweating can be a symptom of a more serious condition. Has your hyperhidrosis been checked by a doctor?

More About Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Causes

Hyperhidrosis comes in 2 forms. Primary hyperhidrosis occurs in early adulthood and usually affects palms, soles, and armpits. The exact cause for this condition is unknown, though it may be hereditary.

Secondary hyperhidrosis is characterized by sweating all over the body and results from a medical condition, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Menopause hot flashes
  • Thyroid problems
  • Low blood sugar
  • Cancer
  • Heart attacks
  • Nervous system disorders
  • Infections

Who is at risk?

Primary hyperhidrosis usually affects individuals with a family history. Secondary hyperhidrosis can affect anyone experiencing one of its triggers.

What are the most effective treatments?

Antiperspirants are the first line of defense against primary hyperhidrosis. Systemic anticholinergic medications can induce a drying reaction in the body. Botox is effective at reducing sweating in the underarms.

Treating secondary hyperhidrosis primarily involves addressing the underlying cause of the condition.
