Biostimulators vs. Skin Boosters: What Is the Difference?

Biostimulators and skin boosters are often mentioned together, and both are injected, but they treat different concerns. Knowing which is which makes it easier to choose the right treatment.

What are biostimulators?

biostimulators, also called collagen stimulators, prompt the skin to produce new collagen in its deeper layers. They are used to restore volume, firmness and support that are lost with age. Examples are Sculptra, made of poly-L-lactic acid, and HarmonyCa, a hybrid of hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxyapatite.

What are skin boosters?

Skin boosters are hyaluronic acid injections placed superficially across an area of skin. They do not add volume or change the shape of the face. Instead, they hydrate the skin from within to improve texture, smoothness and glow.

Key differences

  • Goal: biostimulators rebuild collagen for volume and firmness; skin boosters improve hydration and skin quality.
  • Depth: biostimulators are placed deeper; skin boosters are placed superficially.
  • Onset: biostimulator results build over months; skin booster results appear within weeks.
  • Longevity: biostimulators can last 18 months to two years or more; skin boosters typically last several months.

Which one do I need?

If your main concern is hollowing, sagging or loss of structure, a biostimulator is usually the more relevant treatment. If your skin looks dull, dry or finely lined but your facial volume is good, a skin booster may be the better fit. Many people have both concerns, and the treatments can be combined in a plan.

At Rejuvenation Calgary North, Dr. Danny Guo assesses each patient personally and performs these injectable treatments himself. To find out which approach suits your skin, book a consultation.
