What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers add volume, contour and definition to the lips. They are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body that retains moisture, helping maintain fullness and hydration.
At Rejuvenation Calgary North, Dr. Danny Guo personally performs every lip filler treatment and tailors it to your facial structure, whether you want a subtle enhancement or a more noticeable change.
Before your appointment
- For about a week beforehand, avoid blood-thinning supplements and over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E, and aspirin unless a doctor prescribed it, to reduce bruising and swelling. Tell Dr. Guo about every medication and supplement you take. Do not stop any prescribed medication, including blood thinners, without speaking to the doctor who prescribes it.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before treatment.
- Arrive with clean, makeup-free lips and skin to reduce the risk of infection.
At your consultation, Dr. Guo reviews your medical history, including any history of cold sores, and discusses the shape and volume you are hoping to achieve.
The procedure
A topical numbing cream is typically applied first. You may feel a pinch with each injection, but the treatment is generally well tolerated, and Dr. Guo checks in with you throughout.
You can review the initial result as soon as the injections are finished. The final look takes some time to settle.
Aftercare
- Keep activity light and avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.
- Stay upright, and avoid bending over or lying down for a couple of hours.
- To reduce swelling, apply a cold compress or an ice pack wrapped in a clean, soft cloth, gently and for short periods; do not put ice directly on the skin or leave it on for long.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Do not touch or massage your lips unless instructed to.
- Avoid heat such as sunbathing and saunas, which can worsen swelling.
Follow any personalized instructions from Dr. Guo’s team.
What lip filler can and can’t do
- Technique: Dr. Guo places small amounts with a fine needle or a blunt-tip cannula, working on the border, the body of the lip and the corners as your lips need. The plan follows your own lip shape rather than a set template.
- Size: how much the lips can take in one visit depends on their tissue. A subtle change is easiest in one appointment; a bigger change is usually built over two, so the tissue can adapt.
- Swelling: lips look fuller for the first days than they will once settled. Judge the result at one to two weeks.
- Symmetry: filler can improve uneven lips, but most lips are not perfectly symmetrical, and the aim is balance rather than a mirror image.
- Reversible: hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed.
Results vary from person to person.
Restoring volume lost with age
Lips naturally lose volume and definition with age. Filler can restore that volume and smooth the lip, and can rejuvenate the area around the mouth for a more balanced, proportional face.

Book appointmentLip Fillers frequently asked questions
What are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler used for lip augmentation. They involve lip injections that add volume, shape, and definition to the lips, enhancing their overall appearance.
How Do Lip Fillers Work?
Lip fillers, typically made of hyaluronic acid, are injected into the lips and surrounding areas. This substance retains moisture and adds volume, which helps improve the appearance of lips and restore their natural contours.
What Should I Expect During a Lip Filler Treatment?
During a lip filler treatment, Dr. Guo will use fine needles to inject the filler. The procedure is relatively quick, and a numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort.
Are There Any Potential Side Effects of Lip Fillers?
Minor swelling, redness, and bruising are common side effects of lip filler injections. These typically resolve within a few days. Serious side effects are rare but can include infection, allergic reactions or blockage of a blood vessel (vascular occlusion).
How Long Do the Effects of Lip Fillers Last?
The effects of lip fillers may last around 6–12 months, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors such as metabolism and skin type; the timing of any touch-up is decided at follow-up.
Can Lip Fillers Help with Fine Lines Around the Mouth?
Yes, lip fillers can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, including nasolabial folds. By adding volume, they can smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance.
Can I Get Lip Fillers If I Have a History of Cold Sores?
If you have a history of cold sores, inform your practitioner before treatment. They may recommend taking antiviral medication before and after the procedure to reduce the risk of an outbreak.
What Should I Do to Prepare for a Lip Filler Appointment?
To prepare for lip injections, tell Dr. Guo about every medication and supplement you take, and do not stop any prescribed medication, including blood thinners, yourself; that decision is for the doctor who prescribes it. Avoid alcohol and certain supplements for a week before the procedure. Arrive at your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin.
What Is the Aftercare for Lip Fillers?
After lip filler injections, avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure for 24–48 hours. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and stay hydrated. Follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner.
How Do Lip Fillers Differ from Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
Lip fillers add volume and shape to the lips, while anti-wrinkle injections (such as Botox) relax the muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Both treatments can complement each other to enhance overall facial aesthetics.
Who performs lip filler injections at Rejuvenation Calgary North?
Every lip filler treatment at Rejuvenation Calgary North is performed personally by Dr. Danny Guo, a double board-certified dermatologist (Canada and the United States) and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon.
Do lip fillers hurt?
The lips are sensitive, so some discomfort is expected. A numbing cream may be applied first, and many fillers contain a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to make treatment more comfortable.
Is there downtime after lip fillers?
Most people return to normal activities quickly. Swelling, redness and bruising are common and usually settle within a few days; while swelling lasts, the lips can look fuller than the final result.
How many lip filler treatments will I need?
Many people need one appointment. Some prefer to build volume gradually over two visits for a subtler change. Results usually last around 6–12 months, and the timing of any touch-up is decided at follow-up.
When will I see results from lip fillers?
You will see a change straight away. The final shape is easier to judge once swelling settles, usually within one to two weeks.
