What are Warts?

Warts are a form of viral skin infection characterized by hard lumps most often on the fingers or hands. These lumps tend to be flesh-coloured and are sprinkled with small black dots, which are actually tiny, clotted blood vessels.

Warts usually take 2 to 6 months to develop after your skin has come into contact with the virus.

While warts are generally harmless, most people choose to remove them as they are contagious and unsightly. Warts also rarely resolve on their own.

Causes and treatments for warts

Warts are caused by direct contact with some strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Transmission needs not to be sexual; casual contact or sharing objects with an infected individual is often sufficient.

Given that each person’s immune system is unique, not everyone exposed to HPV develops warts.

Who is at risk?

Individuals with certain forms of immunodeficiency or with suppressed immune systems are at higher risk of contracting warts than others. Children and young adults may also be more susceptible to the virus, as their body has yet to develop immunity to it.

What are the most effective treatments?

Treatments aim to destroy warts and/or spur the immune system to fight against HPV. Repeat liquid nitrogen treatments can freeze warts and make them fall off. Salicylic acid removes layers of a wart bit by bit. A surgical removal is also an option.

Generally, the most successful wart treatments involve combining multiple methods over the course of a few weeks.

Connect with Rejuvenation Calgary North if your warts are not going away on their own. Blending liquid nitrogen treatments and prescription medicine with salicylic acid, our experts’ holistic approach to wart removal minimizes the chance of future breakouts.
