Skin Cancer
Skin cancer entails the abnormal growth of skin cells. Three major types of skin cancer exist:
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Melanoma
What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body but grows most frequently in areas exposed to sunlight.
Not all skin cancers are equally dangerous; basal cell carcinoma rarely metastasizes and is usually not life-threatening, whereas untreated melanoma can lead to death in months.
Symptoms of skin cancer depend on its type. Basal and squamous cell carcinoma generally appear as lumps or open sores on the skin that do not heal. Melanoma is characterized by large, asymmetrical dark spots on the skin that crust on the edges.

Causes and treatments for skin cancer
Sun-induced ultraviolet radiation is the most common cause of skin cancer, though indoor tanning can also lead to this condition. Other less common causes of skin cancers include immunosuppressive medications, immunocompromising health conditions, and genetic conditions.
Who is at risk?
Those who prolong their exposure to the sun without protective clothing or sunscreen are most susceptible to skin cancer. Regular users of tanning facilities should also be watchful for this condition. Lastly, those with a family history of skin cancer or autoimmune diseases are at a higher risk.
What are the most effective treatments?
Surgical removal, specifically Mohs surgery, is widely considered the gold standard of skin cancer treatment. Mohs surgery involves removing thin layers of cancerous skin until only non-cancerous tissue remains. This surgical technique has a success rate of 95% or more treating basal and squamous cell carcinoma.
Additional treatments for skin cancer include wide excision, amputation, lymph node dissection, topical chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Dr Guo’s team at Rejuvenation Calgary North employ a range of treatments to treat all kinds of skin cancer. If you think you show symptoms of skin cancer and want it diagnosed and treated with the latest technologies, call 403-286-6888 or fill out the online contact form below.
