Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an immune system problem that makes the skin regenerate faster than usual. This causes skin inflammation characterized by red, thickened, and scaly plaques.

These itchy skin lesions most commonly target the knees, elbows, and scalp, but can affect all areas of the body. Psoriasis patches can range from a few scaly spots to major outbreaks that cover the entire body.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic condition with no known cure; it flares up for a few weeks or months and goes into remission for a period. Existing treatments and certain lifestyle habits can help you manage your symptoms and cope with the disease.

Make sure to see a doctor if you think you have psoriasis, as it can cause further complications such as arthritis, eye conditions, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases.

Psoriasis: causes, risk factors, and treatments

The cause of the immune system malfunction that leads to psoriasis is often unclear. Some people are more genetically predisposed to psoriasis than others. Environmental triggers can also result in psoriasis. These include:

  • Strep throat or skin infections
  • Dry environment
  • Skin injuries, including sunburns
  • Stress
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Pregnancy
  • Some medications

Who is at risk?

Individuals with a family history of psoriasis are most at risk of the condition, but anybody can develop it.

Those with a family history of eczema and allergies are especially at risk. The same goes for individuals who work with irritants or in dry environments.

Effective psoriasis treatments

Treatments for psoriasis focus on slowing skin growth and removing scales. Topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors can treat mild to moderate cases. Narrowband UVB phototherapy can handle more severe cases. Immunosuppressive medications and biological drugs are reserved for the most extreme cases.
